Commander and General Medical Officer, U.S. Army Health Clinic, Sinop, Turkey. Responsibilities included providing care for 600 active duty and dependent personnel while serving as the sole physician stationed on an extinct volcano in northern Turkey.

General Surgery Resident, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, El Paso, Texas. Responsibilities included learning general surgery. Additionally, established an ATLS style-training program for military medics prior to their deployment for Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

Responsibilities included directing the medical, surgical intensive care units through the JAHCO inspection, purchasing the initial laparoscopic equipment at Womack, establishing a busy laparoscopic service, and multiple field deployments with the Joint Special Operations Command.

Chief, Military Trauma Research Branch, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Surgical Faculty, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Responsibilities included directing 4 Ph.D.’s and 10 research technicians, focused on hemorrhage control and optimal resuscitation strategies. Directed the branch research priorities, budget, and coordinated the ongoing and proposed protocols. Established a new hemostasis research program at the ISR, spearheading the development of a 5-year research-funding stream totaling over 5 million dollars. Performed general and trauma call duties, while teaching surgical residents.
1999-July 2001
Surgery Faculty, The Ben Taub General Hospital, and Director of the Joint Trauma Training Center, Houston, TX. Responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team of nurses, internal medicine, critical care, and trauma surgeons, coordinating actions with civilian surgical department and military headquarters, interacting with city, state, and federal politicians. Responsibility was to rotate military forward surgical teams through a civilian trauma center. Managed a budget in excess of $500,000 per year. Initiated a comprehensive research program focused on hemorrhage control, optimal resuscitation, and trauma informatics. Initiated a Trauma Simulation Center, using the human patient mannequin to document improvement in team performance. Devised and implemented a strategy that opened three additional Military/Civilian centers at major trauma centers in the U.S.
Aug 2001-July 2002
Surgical Critical Care Fellow, University of Texas at Houston. Major responsibility was learning surgical critical care concepts and techniques. Additionally conducted research focused on surgical critical care, hemorrhage control, and trauma informatics. Took Trauma-attending night call. Served as Trauma Advisor to USSOCOM.

Commander of the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research, Ft Sam Houston, TX, and Trauma Consultant for The Army Surgeon General. Command the DoD’s only Surgical Research Laboratory, consisting of 520 personnel, equally focused on a clinical and research mission. Managed a research and personnel budget of 30 million dollars. Established, focused and directed the Combat Casualty Care Research for the Army. Lead efforts to create a clinically active trauma service and oversaw the combination of the two DoD Level-1 trauma centers. Conceived and led efforts to institute across the DoD the Joint Theater Trauma Registry and a Trauma system. Liaison between the DoD and civilian trauma communities. Clinical duties included providing General Surgery, Trauma, Burn, and Critical Care coverage, teaching residents and medical students at Brooke Army Medical Center, the Army’s only Level 1 Trauma Center.

Professor of Surgery, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Assume various research, clinical and teaching roles. Director, Center for Translational Injury Research, a new University-wide center focused on translating preclinical research to the clinic. The goal of the new CeTIR is to change clinical practice with quality data, thus improving outcomes. Head, Division of Acute Care Surgery, a new Division encompassing Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery, and Burns. Assume PI status of the existing P-50 Surgery grant and coordinate resubmission. Assume PI status of the T-32 training grant.
