Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship provides extended training in Surgical Critical Care, to satisfy the American Board of Surgery and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) criteria for the certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care as well as to encourage academic careers and investigation in Surgical Critical Care.  The fellowship is 12 months in duration and spans two different hospitals with very different populations. 

Memorial Hermann - TMC is one of two level 1 trauma centers in the greater Houston area and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is a world renowned cancer hospital.  The fellows have mandatory rotations in the Memorial Hermann Shock/Trauma Intensive Care Unit, the M.D. Anderson Intensive Care Unit and on the Trauma Service.   Additional elective rotations an be arranged in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Neuro Critical Care Unit, the Transplant Unit, the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit or the Burn Unit. Clinical research during the year fellowship is highly encouraged.  Abstract presentation at national meetings is encouraged and supported. Teaching responsibilities include bedside and didactic teaching of surgery and anesthesia residents as well as 4th year medical students.

ACGME (RRC) Approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Length of training: one year
Optional additional training:
  • Trauma: one year program in Tyler, TX with a private Trauma/Critical Care surgery group
  • Research: two year research fellowship with the Division of General Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care
Training Philosophy:
Mastery of critical care concepts and skills is promoted through sharing information with others including medical students, residents, faculty, and staff.

Requirements:

  • completion of a General Surgery Residency
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified General Surgeon or Surgical Subspecialt
  • Texas Medical License
Salary: $42,273.05 (PGY-6)
