
The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery
The Mission of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston is to improve the health and welfare of children requiring neurosurgical care. We strive to do this by promoting a close cooperation between our pediatric neurologists, referring physicians, and hospital personnel.

Stephen Fletcher, DO
Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery
Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery
Dr. Stephen Fletcher received his doctorate of osteopathic medicine from North Texas State University Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital and Memorial Hermann Hospital, and completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Dallas Children's Hospital. Dr. Fletcher is board certified in neurosurgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, and has a special interest in brain tumors and vascular disorders in children. Dr. Fletcher's research interests include: Chiari Malformation in children, comparative studies of canine and pediatric brain tumors, medical management of trauma-associated brain swelling and attempts at culturing brain tumor cell lines in collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Children's Cancer Center.

James E. Baumgartner, MD
Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery
Dr. James Baumgartner is a pediatric neurosurgeon associated with Pediatric Neurosurgical Specialists, an affiliate of Memorial Hermann. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Medicine, he also has a master’s degree in pharmacology from Cambridge University. He completed his neurosurgery residency and fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Baumgartner is board certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and has a special interest in neural tumors, craniofacial anomalies and the surgical treatment of epilepsy.
John M. Jones MD
Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery
Dr. Jones received his medical degree at Tulane Medical School and trained at the Tulane-Ochsner Neurological Surgery Program. He has been in the practice of neurosurgery for 31 years. His areas of interest include pediatric neurosurgery trauma, peripheral nerve injury, adult spine problems and sports medicine. He is a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
